The new PCHR contains more signposting to other sources of health promotion information particularly to the Department of Health publication “Birth to Five”. Birth to Five is currently being updated and is due to be published in Summer 2009.
Additional Pages
The Healthy Child Programme
To explain to parents/carers what is included in the Healthy Child Programme, who carries out reviews and screening and gives health advice and where it is recorded. Signposting to ‘Birth to Five’ for more information has been included.
Breastfeeding
This information page provides details of the National Breastfeeding Helpline, a reminder about the ‘From bump to breastfeeding’ DVD and signposts to ‘Birth to Five’ for more information.
Bookstart
Includes information about the Bookstart programme and provides a web address for more information.
One year review pages
In line with the Healthy Child Programme, these pages provide some information about what children of this age may be doing, provides prompts on the sorts of issues the parents may want to discuss at the review, and signposts to Birth to Five for more information on child development. The page for recording the review includes questions regarding smoking.
Two to two and half year review pages
In line with the Healthy Child Programme, these pages provide some information about what children of this age may be doing, provide prompts on the sorts of issues the parents may want to discuss at the review, and signposts to Birth to Five for more information on child development. (NB, the precise content and nature of the 2-21/2 year review is currently being developed)
New UK-WHO growth charts
The new charts include an information page specifically designed for parents.
Other significant changes
1. Can your baby see. The text has been altered on the advice of the paediatric group of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists
2. Newborn Hearing Screening Programme. Amendments made on the advice of the NHSP.
3. New baby review. In line with the CHPP, these two pages, replace “First visit by health visitor” pages. The content is a little altered and now includes a space for information regarding smoking.
4. 6-8 week review. Information about what will happen at the 6-8 review has been expanded.
5. Hepatitis B
Previously this page was inserted only for those babies whose mothers were identified through antenatal screening as being carriers of hepatitis B. It is now recommended that individual PCTs should decide whether or not to include the page in all records. This will depend on the local prevalence of hepatitis B. In addition space has been added to record some information about the mother (name, NHS number and hepatitis B status). In line with recommendations of DH, the booster dose of hepatitis B vaccine at 3 years 4 months is included.
6. School Entry Review in Reception Class. Space added to record immunisation status and for results of hearing and vision screen.
7. Developmental Firsts
The images have been completely re-drawn, the text altered slightly in line with suggestions from DCFS, and signposting to ‘Birth to Five’ for further information about children’s development added to each page.
8. Dental Health
Advice re seeing NHS dentist altered in line with advice from Deputy Chief Dental Officer, space added for parents/carers to record date first tooth came through.
9. Write through protector amended in line with CHPP
10. The cover has been given a face lift. The red colour is retained.
11. The font has been altered throughout the book to give the PCHR a more modern fresher look.
